how to help a child with anxiety

If you are looking for no unwanted side effects and no medication way to help your child’s anxiety, keep reading!

Are you looking for how to help a child with anxiety?  Did you know that neurofeedback has great results?  It’s non-invasive, non-medical, with no diagnosis needed brain training that can be done in-office or in your home with a neurofeedback home rental system.

As a parent of a child suffering from anxiety, we often feel helpless.  We want our children to feel secure and confident, yet sometimes, no matter how we try, their anxious feelings can negatively affect their lives.

Symptoms of Anxiety in Children

  • trouble sleeping
  • trouble with transitions and separation
  • trouble with attention and concentration
  • physical tension: headaches, stomach aches
  • jumpy or fidgety
  • negative self-talk
  • repetitive behaviors
  • socially withdrawn

How We Define Anxiety in Children

Anxiety is not all bad.  It is our greatest motivator.  It keeps us safe.  Anxiety is a survival skill and has been passed down to us.  We have evolved from ancestors with a healthy amount of anxiety, those without didn’t make it to reproduce!

Examples of good anxiety and stress:

  • Child procrastinated on getting school work done, now it’s due tomorrow and they are feeling stressed and anxious about it (which is now the motivator to get it done.)
  • We are in a situation that feels unsafe or around people who make us feel uncomfortable (like at a party where the kids around are using drugs or alcohol.)  Our anxiety is telling us to be cautious and maybe to even remove ourselves.  This is the good anxiety we want to listen to.

Examples of bad anxiety and stress:

There are two ways we define unhealthy anxiety in children.

  1. Anxiety in the absence of a threat
  2. Anxiety out of proportion to the threat

How NeuroFeedback Can Help a Child with Anxiety

Anxiety is ranked second, after sleep and attention, as the issue found to perform particularly well with NeurOptimal Neurofeedback. ( You can read more about that on the Trainer Survey.)

Whenever I am unhooking a young person in my office after their brain training session I ask them how they feel and 9.5 out of 10 say calm or relaxed.  Many parents let me know that that calm stays with the child after they get home.

NeurOptimal Neurofeedback talks directly with the central nervous system (CNS), giving it the information it needs to optimize and organize.  The 2 sensors are pasted to your scalp that read your cortical activity, sampling 256 times per second.  The software is looking for a flutter in the signal, which is a sign that the brain did something.  This creates an audible skip in the music (or movie) soundtrack you are listening to, which alerts the CNS to pay attention. When the CNS is brought to awareness by this feedback, it goes through a series of optimizations to make sure that it is being it’s most optimal and efficient with its energy.  Spending energy holding anxiety over things that aren’t a current threat isn’t optimal, and this is why the brain will begin to let it go as it trains.   The process is passive, the brain does all the work.  Your child can be reading, napping, playing a puzzle or I can play a movie for the neurofeedback.  This is another reason why it is so easy to help kids, they don’t have to do anything to get the benefits.

Does your child have symptoms of anxiety that are keeping them from fully enjoying life?  Please try neurofeedback, it could make such a difference.
